Project overview
This 1940s property was the first Initial Designs project. An extension had initially been considered, but a careful review showed that the family’s requirements could be met by rethinking the existing layout—improving how the home worked without the additional cost and disruption of building more space.

Design story
We began with how the family wanted to live, what was not working within the existing arrangement and which changes would make the greatest difference within the available budget.
Instead of treating an extension as the default answer, we looked closely at the space already available. A new internal layout improved the relationships between rooms, made movement through the property more intuitive and created a more practical setting for family life.
The interior was modernised through considered layout and design decisions while remaining grounded in the character of the 1940s property and the realities of the budget.
The completed redesign gave the family the functionality and environment they needed without extending. It also established an approach that remains central to Initial Designs: understand the property first, then invest where the change will have the greatest value.
